This lyric explores the many excuses we give for not showing the Gospel of God’s love to the lonely hearts we encounter every day. The story is based on the Bible’s New Testament parable or illustration of Jesus about a farmer who is sowing seeds. It can be found in the book of Matthew in chapter 13.  The lyric verses are cut time, while the chorus has a 4/4 rhythm.

Verse 1:
The ground is too rocky.
The sun’s rays are too strong.
There isn’t fertile farmland
For plants to grow upon.
I’ve plowed this field before, Lord.
Nothing here will grow.
But I hear the Master answer
Now the same as long ago . . .

Chorus:
“Plant the seed . . .
I’ll harvest in my time.
You don’t need . . .
To question ‘Where?’ or ‘Why?’
I’ll increase . . .
The bounty I supply
If you’ll only plant the seed.”

Verse 2:
A soul with indiff’rence
Or people without hope
And those who’ve turned from God’s way
All have a need to know—
The power of redemption
Through God’s perfect love.
So I’ll scatter seeds of God’s Word
As the Father says I must . . .
