Building a Book

Building a book is like building a house. For me, first comes the story I’m going to narrate—the basic framework of my house, those pieces of wood nailed in place.

Next, I share my story with my artist collaborator, Courtney Coriell Williams, and tell her the illustrations I have in my mind. When she delivers her vibrant colorful images to me, I make a mock-up—a page by page layout of the new book. The walls of the house go up!

The last phase of building a book involves the technical expertise of my daughter Eve who electronically submits our work to Kindle Direct Press (KDP), the self-publishing entity of Amazon. Now plumbing, electricity, and decorative touches are in place.

When KDP is satisfied with the spacing, margins, and other tiny details, we are ready to publish! Blog readers, we are almost there!
