When It Rains, It Pours

Have you ever wondered where the expression “When it rains, it pours” comes from? It dates back at least to the slogan associated with the girl on the cylinder of Morton Salt, which first appeared in 1914. I happened to purchase a container recently when grocery shopping. And there she was! Looking just as playful as I remember her from years past.

While doing a little research, I discovered that the Morton Salt Company had introduced an additive to their salt to keep it from clumping — causing it to “pour” more freely — thus enhancing its mixing properties to the delight of bakers, including those in the home.

If you’ve read this blog post thus far, you’re probably thinking, “I always thought, ‘When it rains, it pours’ was a negative statement.” Well, there you have it: in the context of the Morton Salt Girl logo, it is a positive expression. So, if you have been down on your luck recently and it seems as though one bad event after another plagues you, think of the Morton Salt Girl and smile!
