Would You Hide Me?

Recently I tuned into “Today with Hoda and Jenna” on NBC as I was eating my late breakfast. It was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 21—and in 2021 the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Polish concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. It caught my attention as I remembered the extreme sadness I felt when I visited the German camp of Dachau some years ago.

I just heard Hoda and Jenna’s closing remarks on an interview they had done with a Jewish woman. She had lived through Nazi dictator Adolph Hitler’s Auschwitz. It was one of many camps throughout Europe as Hitler sought to ‘cleanse’ Germany, and other countries his armies invaded, of those he thought unfit to live. These so-called unfit or inferiors included Jews, Slavs and Asians, homosexuals, disabled people, and others.

What was striking about this interview was the internal question this Jewish lady used throughout her long lifetime to judge potential relationships with those she met for the first time. Her survival of the Holocaust had been due to being hidden by untargeted Poles. So whenever she met someone for the first time, she asked herself, “Would you have hidden me?”

The Scripture verse Psalm 27:5, in various languages below, talks about how the LORD GOD of all peoples of the earth hides us, demonstrating how much HE values the worth of each individual.

English—”For in the day of trouble HE will keep me safe in his dwelling; HE will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent . . .” Psalm 27:5 NIV (The Holy Bible, New international Version)

Français—<<Au mauvais jour, IL me mettra à couvert dans sa loge, IL me tiendra caché dans le secret de sa tente . . . >> Psaume 27:5 FRDBY (Bible Darby en français)

Español—<<Porque ÉL me esconderá en su tabernáculo en el día del mal; me ocultará en lo reservado de su morada . . . >> Salmo 27:5 RVR95 (Biblia Reina Valera 1995)

Deutsch—<<Wenn schlimme Tage kommen, birgt ER mich seinem Haus, unter seinem Dach gibt ER mir Schutz . . . >> Psalm 27:5 NBH (NeÚ bibel.heute)
