From time to time I’ve watched a few of the PBS episodes called “Storage Wars.” These are about abandoned rental storage units all over the U.S.A. opened up for on-site auction sales of the contents. Whether the unit contains junk or ‘jewels,’ it may represent our desire to acquire more and more. Along with that thought, wanting more may turn into greed for what others have, whether it is possessions or lifestyle. But actually, how much stuff is enough?
Do we want . . .
a house as costly as a neighbor’s whether we can afford it or not,
a luxury car in the latest model so we feel important,
expensive designer clothes so we can impress,
extravagant purchases so we can appear rich,
a mate who seems more attractive, compatible, and desirable than the one we have?
Greed or covetousness is addressed in today’s last—the eleventh—blog post in my Lighthouse Lamps series. Each lamp shines a light onto our life’s path directing us to the fullest life we can achieve. These Lighthouse Lamps are the Ten Commandments brought down through the centuries from the Judeo-Christian tradition. They are not meant to be rules to stifle our lives but rather helps to set us free so we can be our best selves.
The tenth Lighthouse Lamp is below in English, French, Spanish, and German. May we be willing to let it and the other nine direct all our lives. Read them. Listen to them in an app such as Google Translate. Learn them. Practice them. And may God bless you as you do.
