Compromise can denote a positive or a negative action. Positively it involves civil discussion on the merits of a particular action. When we can voice our point of view without getting into a shouting match, we are on our way to showing respect for the person or persons we are engaging with, even if we don’t think we will change anybody’s mind. An affirmative compromise shows a respectful ‘give and take.’ If we are to reach an agreement we will have to relinquish something we want to obtain something else desired. In other words, we must realize we can’t have everything we would like to have!
Negatively, compromise shows a subservient ‘giving in’ or ‘giving up prematurely.’ This occurs when we feel so beaten down by life events or circumstances that we say, “I give up!” In some situations this might be the sane thing to do. However, sometimes we surrender too soon because we have not explored enough avenues for attaining our near and long-term goals. Many times, to attain these goals we need to reach out to those who can serve as mentors. Who can be our mentors? People who have been through similar crises and have found ways to come out winners!
