The directives which are the basis of the Judeo-Christian tradition of reverence and worship of God, and also believers’ conduct, are found in the early writings of the Holy Bible. However, even those raised in this tradition sometimes are conflicted between wanting to do what they have been taught is ‘right’ and feeling constricted by a set of rules. The series “Lighthouse Lamps” which I introduced in my last blog post are instructions passed down from antiquity which are meant to be guiding lights for our lives. The Bible calls them the Ten Commandments.
They are found in Exodus chapter 20, verses 3 through 17. Probably most of you reading this blog post have heard of these Ten commandments. But can you recite them? At least some of them? I am going to present them simply with little explanation in snippet format, just one at a time. There will be only one directive each week, and I intend to let the words speak for themselves. I hope these “Lighthouse Lamps” will illuminate your life’s path. That road we’re on, as you know, can sometimes seem very dark and difficult to travel.
Today we’ll look at the words which describe what I am going to call “The First Lamp.” I am not a Hebrew scholar so I can’t go back to the original language. But I’ve copied for you what translators have written for us in modern English, French, Spanish, and German as these are the languages with which I am familiar. Read one or more translations below. Audio of the Scriptures is also available in the Google Translate app. I hope you’ll hide this lamp’s essence in your heart and permit the Holy Spirit to reveal its meaning.
